Been thinking about going with a catless down pipe on my car in the future. What are the advantages & disadvantages of not having a cat on my exhaust? :dunno:

I'm going to :box: anybody who says the car needs "backpressure"
It will change the exhaust sound, it will have a sharper, hollower, less muddy sound with more crackle and rasp usually.
It will allow better airflow.
It will drop weight.
It will reduce heat buildup in the area around the cat.
Your computer will probably notice its not there, OBDII and later cars have pre/post cat 02 sensors. Usually you'll get a check engine light, usually a change to your tune can fix it. Some cars respond to inline MIL eliminators better than others, they plug in between your wiring harness and 02 sensor and get rid of the error code.
Your exhaust will have a different smell to it without one.
That pretty much sums it up.

I know that without the cat it will give me a CEL but will it affect how the car runs at all? I'm not exactly looking for performance gains by doing this just more efficiency and better flow & sound.

The CEL will depend entirely on how that particular car is programmed to respond to that fault code, for example on some (like mine) it does pretty much nothing.

its ez to fix the cel anyway with a spark plug non fouler :) go for it if you run race gas no need to worry about effing the cat up

The problem is I have an exhaust rattle now & even RLS can't seem to figure out what it is. Image & I were talking & Cobalt's are known for the cats going bad. I think the rattle may actually be coming from the cat itself so F it. I want to go 3" catless anyway, so I was wondering what the advantages & disadvantages are from doing this.

So give me your opinion...
3" catless or aftermarket high flow cat exhaust on the Cobalt? :dunno:

All of my cars are catless. You can even recycle the old cat and get some $$ for it.
In my "OP" cars run better, faster, and better all around. Besides if that car is supercharged or turbo'ed it will make more power.

Catless on a supercharged 4 cyl will be loud.....ask rizzo when his civic was supercharged with no cat and 3 inch exhaust. I would go catless, but it may sound bad, but should perform better.

I'm not going with a straight through muffler though so that should help some & I plan on using a resonator to help also.

High flow cat with 2.5'' exhaust is what I would do (with resonator like you said). I've heard a lot of ecotec's and you definitely want some form of restriction to keep it sounding decent unless you have a turbo sitting behind your engine.
I assume you're getting a header as well? Or do you have one already? That will also effect the sound for better or worse depending on what you go with.
A tune would also be a good idea while you're doing all this.
