sounds like it's some kinda fraud program

should follow my handy dandy cleanup thread i posted a while back, make sure you don't have any junk, then download sp3, install that and be done, turn off auto updates...

automatic updates is a PITA...always has been

just leave it off, and once a month hit "update.windows.com" with your internet explorer browser (firefox won't access it properly)

and do the critical updates

you can do all of the optional updates as well, but most people the critical will do just fine; however, be VERY VERY CAREFUL when downloading any "hardware" updates (drivers) because it can do some funky stuff to your machine

I had to go and remove the update in order to access the net again, unless I wanted to run without a firewall.

Huh. It still sounds initially like its some setting buried somewhere that is getting tripped, or just a flaw in the update.

Has anybody tried using the Winsockxp fix after doing this? I've seen that solve a lot of weird voodoo shit. Especially after doing an intense spyware/virus cleanup that mysteriously knocks out your internet connection.

if you adjust your zonealarm to medium security it will let you acess the net. i just shut off the automatic updates and said screw it lol

gerbil, you are correct. i checked out the site and thats the same thing i had going on.

Gotta love that. We have had that problem here at work because we are using WSUS. I need to figure out which update it is and decline it.

Windows Update (KB915748) is the update. You can remove it manually through the add/remove programs if you've installed it and it should work okay.

It seems to mainly strike out against zone alarm users and other third party firewalls that use incoming port scanning, so my guess is winsock fix will not work as MS probably changed packet handling

no problems here. I have all the updates and my comp runs fine. But then I don't use zone alarm.

could target 3rd party firewalls - which most software firewalls are useless anyway

thanks Henry...now go find your damn phone

I get a newsletter called 'Windows Secrets' and this was from the Oct.16,2008 letter.

PATCH WATCH

Patch knocks out Net for XP PCs with ZoneAlarm

Susan Bradley By Susan Bradley

Once again, a Windows security patch is causing users of ZoneAlarm security software on XP systems to lose their Internet connection.

It's important for users of many different ZoneAlarm products to update their programs before installing this week's XP patches.

MS08-066 (956803)
ZoneAlarm users: postpone this week's XP patch

This week, a special heads-up is needed for Windows XP users who have Check Point Software's ZoneAlarm security products installed on their systems. Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-066 (patch 956803), which updates the Microsoft Ancillary Function Driver, can throw your Internet connection for a loop.

The ZoneAlarm and Check Point products affected by the patch are:

• ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 6.5.645.000 to 7.0.482.000
• ZoneAlarm Pro 6.5.645.000 to 7.0.482.000
• ZoneAlarm Antivirus 6.5.645.000 to 7.0.482.000
• ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware 6.5.645.000 to 7.0.482.000
• ZoneAlarm Basic Firewall 6.5.645.000 to 7.0.482.000
• Check Point Endpoint Security 6.5.645.000 to 7.0.865.000 (excluding 7.0.843.0007 and 7.0.866.000)

Before you apply the XP patch, visit Check Point's download page and look for an updated version of your ZoneAlarm software. Don't update XP until a ZoneAlarm refresh is available.
