i want to run a straight pipe on my cherokee xj, and keep the cat, its a 2 1/4 pipe, so should i get a 2 1/2 pipe to put over the spot where the muffler normally goes?

Did you ever get this deal all sorted out??

When working with exhaust systems, you have your I.D. (inner-diameter) and O.D. (outer diameter) pipe sizes... typically the I.D. size only runs about 2" into the pipe, on each end, with the running length of the pipe being an O.D. size. So in your case, you'd want a section of 2 1/4" O.D. pipe w/ the ends expanded up to 2 1/4" I.D. The U-bolt exhaust clamps are designed to go over an I.D. pipe.... so you'd want 2 1/4" clamps to join your slip fit at each end.

i got the right sized pipe and everything, but i clamped em all down, then when i was driving the effin clamp came loose or somethin and the pipe just started dragging on the pavement, hahaha, now i just have it cut off at the cat and no exhaust, i dont even kno what to do, cuz if i put it back on straight pipe, it may just come loose again

I suggest having it welded, then.
